- born cecil atticus bottreaux on july 23, 1788
- only child of stuart bottreaux, baron of molland bottreaux, and madeline (~nee grisham)
- mother died when he was a toddler
- childhood was spent mostly in solitude at molland bottreaux in cornwall
- privately tutored until he attended trinity college, cambridge (fellow while there).
- worked in the attorney's general office until wanderlust seized him and he quit to join the royal marines in 1808
- served as a lieutenant on a third rate ship of the line in the adriatic campaign near corfu during the sixth coalition against napoleon (1813-1814).
- his experiences left him disillusioned and, despite a promising naval career, he chose not to renew his commission and disappeared. family and friends haven't seen him since.
- now goes by atticus cartwright (his nursemaid's surname; also a reference to major john cartwright).
- a vagabond and hermit
- recently settled outside of meryton at a former fishing lodge, now cottage boarded by trees and perched upon a large pond; renamed the area to "avalon."
- spends most of his time walking the countryside with his dog, dustros, and reading.
- secretly the author of a series of critically and commercially acclaimed nature/travel books under the nom de plume, "bernard stirling."
- keeps to himself, never attends church, and only goes to town for supplies. sometimes is seen leaving town and doesn't return for weeks (never reveals where he went and why).
- because of his reserved personality and his reluctance to discuss his past, rumours swirl around town that he's a criminal. of course, aside from his """strange""" behaviour and the still fresh memory of one mr. george wickham, there's no evidence of criminal or foul activities
- neither confirms nor denies these rumours; in fact, he ignores them. he doesn't care what they say of him.

personality
- aloof, lackadaisical, easygoing; sometimes bordering on cold and detached.
- sometimes prone to absentmindedness and getting lost in his thoughts. the result of spending most of his time by himself.
- his lonely childhood gave him the countenance to endure isolation. he is however friendly, revels in comradery, and happy to converse with others. but he doesn't actively seek out human contact. he's just as content to be at home or walking in the woods, alone
- doesn't listen or care about other's opinions of him; he's not hurting anyone so who cares? that courtesy is extended to others. so long as one's actions doesn't trample on another's life and happiness, he pays no mind.
